Urgent Call to Action: Launch of Homes for Health Initiative
Residents of Bellingen Shire are invited to a public meeting on Sunday, March 2, to support the launch of the Homes for Health initiative — a community-led response to the housing crisis affecting local healthcare services.
A shortage of affordable housing is making it difficult to recruit and retain nurses and healthcare workers, contributing to the closure of 16 hospital beds across Bellingen and Dorrigo. The Homes for Health initiative, led by the Bellinger Health Action Group (BHAG), Housing Matters Action Group (HMAG), and Bellingen Shire Council (BSC), aims to address this crisis.
Mayor Steve Allan emphasised the community’s role: “We need homes for our health workers, and together, we can make it happen.” HMAG Coordinator Rose West added, “This is our healthcare system. We all need to be part of the solution.”
The free event will outline the vision for safe, affordable housing for healthcare staff. Morning tea provided.
