The Bellingen Memorial Hall (Est. 1929) serves as a Multi Purpose Facility for the Bellingen Shire and provides a venue for touring acts. Originally a picture theatre (circa 1929) the Hall was established by World War 1 Return Soldiers. The Bellingen Historical Society has produced a booklet detailing its evolution.
Activities in the Hall consist of classes run through the week by independent tutors (dance, martial arts, drumming etc.), private functions, and concerts by touring acts and local performers. Movies are shown to a lesser degree using the drop down screen and digital projector.
Licensed for a maximum of 600 people, the main hall room caters to various scales of events. A black woollen curtain divides the room in half for smaller crowds and more intimate performances.
For seated events there are 160 fixed tiered seats and approx. 250 plastic chairs. There are portable stages for more flexible use of the room plus the old raised Stage at the southern end of the main room. This area also contains a toilet, showers and a change room; a black backdrop and a lighting Bar. There is a supper room under the stage.
Supper Room & Kitchen, useful as a meeting, function, community group room and green room. It includes a stainless steel tea room kitchen with a fridge and microwave.
|The Hall is a Bellingen Shire Council building run by a volunteer Management Committee. The Committee oversees the hire of the facility, maintenance issues, production hire, cleaning and upgrading.
In the last decade the Hall has needed much attention. Through the efforts of the Management Committee over $400,000 has been raised via grant submissions to the Federal and State governments with the assistance of current President Mark Willis, Arts Mid North Coast and the Bellingen Shire Council.
|Upgrading and works on the Hall have included re-roofing, re-flooring, re-painting inside and out with the addition of showers and toilet as an annex to the stage. An audio assessment to address acoustic issues resulted in the installation of baffles and carpet, the upgrade of production equipment to include PA and lighting systems, plus a digital projector with a large automated drop down screen.
